Hakone 1
Hakone (箱根町, Hakone-machi)
When I first read about the little town of Hakone it gave me this feeling of warmth, cheek, intrigue and air of mystery. As the colours emerged on the canvas, and more kaleidoscopic fragments danced in my mind, I felt as if Yōkai (“ghost”, “phantom”, “strange apparition”) were wanting to be a part of this still life Hakone story. Toying, playing tricks with my visions as they shape-shifted their form through the peaks of light down the mountain. As we frolicked, I drew on their mischievous nature, playfulness and rebellion to form the bold pops of colour and unexpected texture featured throughout this piece.
I imagined watching the ancient Japanese Yōkai play through the forest and the base of Mt. Fuji from across Lake Ashi.
This is a moment of pause, an imaginative view created prior to travelling the beautiful Japan.
